Significance of this ritual

Tarpan is the offering of water to three generations of ancestors on both the paternal and maternal sides. It is the simplest and most direct of the pitru rites.

How the ritual is performed

Achamana, pavitra and darbha are prepared, sankalpa is taken, and water with sesame is offered to the pitrus, matru pitrus and the guru lineage in the prescribed order, closing with prarthana.

When it is observed

On Amavasya, Mahalaya Paksha days, solar and lunar eclipses, Sankranti days and the annual shraddha tithi.
